What is a thermostatic expansion valve (TXV)?

A thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) is an automatic metering device that regulates refrigerant flow into the evaporator coil by responding to temperature and pressure changes, replacing fixed restriction points in air conditioning systems.

The thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator coil in an air conditioning system. It works by sensing the temperature of refrigerant leaving the evaporator and adjusting a needle valve opening to maintain proper refrigerant flow. When the coil gets warmer, the TXV opens wider to allow more refrigerant in. When the coil cools down, the valve restricts flow to prevent excess liquid from reaching the compressor.

Unlike fixed orifice metering devices (such as capillary tubes or fixed piston restrictors), a TXV adapts in real time to changing load conditions. This dynamic response means the system matches refrigerant delivery to the actual cooling demand at any moment. In Phoenix's desert heat and variable indoor loads, this adjustment reduces compressor strain and improves efficiency by preventing both refrigerant starvation in the coil and flooded returns to the compressor.

TXV systems typically consist of the expansion valve body, a sensing bulb attached to the evaporator outlet line, and internal ports that modulate refrigerant pressure. When properly installed and calibrated, they deliver steadier performance than fixed devices and lower energy consumption. Many newer residential and commercial AC units in the Phoenix area use TXVs as standard for these efficiency gains. AC repair and installation contractors routinely service and replace these valves when they become stuck, lose calibration, or fail.
